Job summary

Working under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population.  In addition, the Phlebotomist will be expected to manage the pathology supplies orders needed for the clinic.  

Southcote Clinic must ensure that the post holder has access to appropriate clinical supervision and an appropriate named individual in the organisation to provide general advice and support on a day-to-day basis.

Main duties and Responsibilities

The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  1. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
  2. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
  3. Maintaining accurate patient records on EMIS 
  4. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples
  5. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
  6. Maintaining an effective liaison with the reception staff about collection of the samples
  7. Working collaboratively with the nursing team/admin team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters
  8. Ordering and maintaining sufficient stock of pathology supplies needed for the phlebotomy clinics

  • In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust us with, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their health and other matters.   They do so in confidence and have the right to expect that staff will respect their privacy and act appropriately
  • In the performance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, Practice staff and other healthcare workers.  They may also have access to information relating to the Practice as a business organisation.  All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential
  • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues, other healthcare workers or the business of the Practice may only be divulged to authorised persons in accordance with the Practice policies and procedures relating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data

  • Using personal security systems within the workplace according to Practice guidelines

  • Using appropriate infection control procedures, maintaining work areas in a tidy and safe way and free from hazards
  • Reporting potential risks identified
